Church Rocks Loop (A taste of Moab in St. George)



The ride lies about 6 miles northeast of St. George and is a 6.4 mile loop.
The loop is a series of single track (and what we label) maintained dirt.
There is 3 miles of the single track and 3.4 miles of packed dirt.
For this ride it should almost take 2 hours.
This is another trail that will be scaled in the middle of the 1-10 spectrum.
With great views, sudden drops, and short steep sections, you will have a good time maneuvering through the terrain.
It is an excellent ride for your first time on slick rock.
Have fun, and remember to tuck your head and roll, you’ll save your elbows.

Getting there: Take the Washington exit from I-15 (about 10 miles north of St. George). Turn towards town, then turn left at the traffic light onto Telegraph Road. Drive 3.3 miles through Washington and begin climbing a hill. At the top of the hill, you’ll see the gravel road on your left (usually blocked with a chain and labeled “No Trespassing.”) at GPS N 37� 08.316′ W 113� 28.140′.

J.E.M. Trail


The ride starts about 8 miles east of Hurricane.
It is a 12.7 mile loop and will take anywhere between 2-3 hours.
There is 6.1 miles on a single track.
4.4 miles on double track, and 2.2 miles on dirt road.
This is an excellent ride that has some beautiful views.
With sudden drop-offs and some quick descents, this ride is overall a great time to enjoy riding with a spouse, loved one, or buddy.


Getting there: From I-15 north, take the La Verkin exit on UT-17. From the south, take the Hurricane exit on US-9 and go through Hurricane towards Zion National Park. At the junction of US-9 with UT-17, turn east towards Zion. 4.8 miles after the turnoff, right after mile marker 17, a gravel road turns right (south). 0.5 miles later, you’ll cross over the Virgin River. Cross a cattle guard, then turn right 0.1 miles after the bridge and go 0.2 miles to a turn-around overlooking the Virgin River. G.P.S. N 37� 12.029′ W 113� 13.089′

Upper JEM trail head: In Hurricane, turn south on US-59 (towards the Grand Canyon). Drive exactly 5 miles uphill. Turn left on cindered double track right as you approach the base of Gooseberry Mesa. Drive another 0.3 miles to the parking area. N 37 08.329′ W 113 14.527′

Paradise Canyon (Just a plain ole’ good ride)


This ride begins about 4 miles from down town St. George.
Its about a 7 miles loop that has many different options of routes you can take.
With the first section consisting of double track, the rest of the ride is single track.
With a gradual climb to the peak, you can take your time enjoying the surroundings.
However, don’t take your eyes off the downhill section of the trail.
With very steep and uneven surfaces, you can get yourself in a lot of trouble very quickly.
Keep your hands lightly gripped to your handlebars and leave your front brake alone.
With one quick tap of your front brake on some descents, and over you go.
With a wonderful backdrop and crazy downhill�s, you’ll come back to this one.


Getting there: Go north on Bluff Street until you’re leaving down and starting uphill. Turn left at the traffic light onto Snow Canyon Parkway. Take the first right onto Sonoran Drive in Paradise Canyon subdivision, then immediately turn left and continue to the parking at the edge of the wash (corner of Road Runner and Falcon Dr). Head north on the paved road along the wash to where Road Runner turns right to become Hummingbird Dr. Spot the trail heading to the fence, at the apex of the corner. GPS N 37� 08.280′ W 113� 36.660′. Update Note 4/04: the parking spots along the wash (described above) have been removed. Please find parking on Snow Canyon Parkway, then ride your bike to the trailhead.

Red Hill (City Creek-Rusty Cliffs Trail) Intense Riding close to downtown


City Creek – Rusty Cliffs Trail
Beginning on Turtle Road above the red cliffs north of St. George, the City Creek trail offers some rocky options before it drops down and crosses the road, to become the Rusty Cliffs Trail. The combined trail makes a 6-mile (each way) out-and-back with about 300 vertical feet of climbing. Most of the trail is intermediate technical, with an advanced technical optional side loop on City Creek.

The trail begins at the top of Turtle Road, above the red cliffs north of St. George. The trail begins across from the parking area. When you hit an open area, the official trail continues straight. But if you head left, up the broad set of step-like rocky ledges, you’ll find a fun alternate route. The trail will turn northwest. Right when it begins to veer back southwest again, watch carefully for a singletrack that climbs up and over the small ridge. This advanced-tech trail will take you back to the main City Creek trail.

The trail will head towards the road, going north around the small canyon that begins at the golf course. From here, it heads back southwest and over the hill to the road. After crossing the road, the broad Rusty Cliffs trail should be easy to follow. This trail was an old pioneer road.

red-hill-mapGetting there: From St. George Blvd (the main drag), head north on Main Street (towards the “Dixie” painted on the big rock above the cliffs). When you reach Hope Street, turn right, then immediately take the left fork and climb Skyline Drive to the top of the cliffs. Turn left on Snow Canyon Parkway (labeled Skyline Drive on some city maps, and called Turtle Road by many locals). At the top of the hill, turn right into the parking area. The trail starts across the road.
Alternate: Head north straight up Bluff Street until it leaves town. At the light where Bluff intersects Snow Canyon Parkway, turn right. Drive back about 2 miles to the parking area.

Gooseberry Mesa (The one that everybody asks about)


Of the popular local trails, this one is definitely the furthest away. This trail has been featured as one of the best by several national publications.
It will take about 1 hour to get to the trail head from St. George.
Once you have arrived in the parking lot, make sure that if you are not too sure of your “SPD’s” that you change your pedals. There is a short practice loop for first timers.
If you are sure of your ability to clip out quickly, be assured that you will be doing it frequently the first time around the 11.1 mile loop.
It should take you around three hours to complete the loop. If you are looking for technical then you have definitely found it.
If you are looking for fast, this is not it.
With sudden turns and steep drop-offs you will need to be on your game with this trail.
This trail will make you pay for your mistakes, but you will feel rewarded when you have made it back to the parking lot.

gooseberry-mesa-mapGetting there — North: As you approach Zion National Park in Rockville, turn south (right) on Bridge Road. Continue straight until the road turns right (west) and turns to gravel. Keep left at the fork at 1.5 miles. At 6.2 miles, watch for a road going through the fence on your right at the top of the mesa. 3.6 miles after this turnoff, fork left at the outhouse. Now ignore any smaller branching roads. 1.1 miles later, you’ll cross a cattle guard. Park there. The trail begins along the fence on the left side N 37� 08.500 W 113� 10.300′
Getting there — South: In Hurricane heading east on Highway 9, turn right at the Highway 59 sign. One block later, turn left and drive out of town. About 15 minutes later, pass a gas station on the left-hand side, then some fields. Watch for a “Scenic Byway” sign 14.8 miles from the turnoff in Hurricane, and turn hard left onto a dirt road. Two miles later, just as you reach juniper trees, the Gooseberry Mesa road turns off on your left. Drive to the trail head as above.

Bear Claw Poppy Trail / Green Valley Loop (The Local Favorite)


This was the first established mountain bike trail in St. George. Now adopted by the BLM and called the Bear Claw Poppy Trail, this ride lies about 6 miles west of St. George and is a 10.2 mile loop.

This loop consists of 3.8 miles of single track, 4.6 miles of double track and 1.8 miles of paved road.
The estimated time to finish is 2 hours.

The difficulty level stays around the middle of the spectrum, with very fast sections as well as some sketchy descents. For beginning riders, try riding the trail from end to start. This will give you 90% of the fun with 10% of the risk for injury.

When out enjoying this fun and fast side, you will notice that there has been signs posted to mark the different sections of the ride. Some of these are “Three Fingers of Death”, “Acid Drops”, and the “Roller Coaster”. With name like these, you will be sure to enjoy the time you spend on this bike trail. There is a great out and back side route signed Stucki Spring.

Getting there, Green Valley: Take the Bluff Street I-15 exit in St. George and turn west. Immediately turn south (left) on Hilton Drive. Go past the golf course and turn right when you reach Dixie Drive. Turn left at the sign for Green Valley Spa. Drive past the spa to the end of the paved road. You can park here and ride to the road that climbs the RIGHT side of the little sandstone canyon. Or, you can stay in your car and turn right on dirt, then drop left down into the valley 100 yards later. Follow the improved gravel road up to the parking area about 3/4 mile later.

Bloomington: We recommend that youngsters go to the Bloomington end of the trail! Go to the west end of Navajo Drive in Bloomington. Go across the cattle guard. See the low rail on the fence 100 feet to your right? That’s the trailhead.
